Professional path
Dr. Selma B. Souto, MD, is graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. Her training internship for specialization in endocrinology and nutrition was done at the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário São João (CHUSJ). During her internship, Dr. Souto was seconded to the Endocrinology Service at Hospital Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona.
After receiving the title of specialist from CHUSJ in 2013 Dr. Souto moved to the Endocrinology Department of Braga Hospital, undertaking the responsibility of supervising the Endocrinology Medical Internships, and became part of multidisciplinary teams treating Obesity, Thyroid Oncology and Obstetric Endocrinology.
In 2019, Dr. Souto returned to the Endocrinology department of the CHUSJ, embracing the task of creating the Non-Surgical Treatment of Obesity Clinic. There, she joined the Centre for Integrated Responsibility for Obesity, as well as the Endocrinology and Pregnancy team.
Among her professional roles, she has been a training advisor for fellows in Endocrinology and Nutrition, General and Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine. She also acted a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, teaching different topics in the field of endocrinology, in particular, obesity. She delivered seminars in the Endocrinology programme of the Integrated Master in Medicine of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Minho.
Dr. Souto served as the General Secretary of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Obesity in the three-year periods 2016-2018 and 2019-2021, and is currently the Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (2024-2026).
She is a member of several national and international scientific societies in the field of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity.
She is a member of the Board of Directors of the College of the Specialty of Endocrinology and Nutrition of the Medical Association

She was the author and co-author of more than 20 book chapters in the area of Obesity and Diabetes, having coordinated the writing of the book “Manual of Non-Surgical Treatment of Adult Obesity”.
